A Number of Hurt as Turbulence Hits Delta Aircraft Landing at Sydney, Australia

A number of individuals have been injured following a Delta Airlines aircraft originating in LA to Sydney, Australia experienced turbulence on Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, a company official told. Several cabin crew members were injured.

Emergency medical services said they treated five patients, and transported a trio to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that such as back pain and headaches. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

This marks the latest incident of commercial jets being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with experts saying that shifting climate patterns is a significant contributor.

On board were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the Delta spokesperson added, stating that the plane arrived "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on the day in question.

Emergency responders reported they received a call just a mere three minutes prior to the plane landed, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is growing more frequent - and more severe.

During the past year, twenty-five passengers and crew were hurt when a Delta Airlines flight, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "significant" rough air just a couple of hours into the lengthy trip, and had to make an emergency landing.

Earlier this year, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a harrowing short but intense bout of severe turbulence. One passenger lost their life and many were hurt, as individuals not fastened in lifted out of their seats and were slammed back.

Bumpy air is not uncommon while flying, and while occurrences of strong or severe turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are remained quite uncommon.

Data suggests that there are around thousands of instances of severe-or-greater turbulence annually, out of a total of over 35 million aircraft departures that now take off around the world.

Intense turbulence is defined as when the sudden jolts of a jet going through rough air masses exert more than a significant G-force on your body - sufficient force to throw you from your seat if you weren't wearing a seatbelt.

As a changing climate shifts weather patterns, specialists caution that commercial aviation could become bumpier: temperature changes and shifting wind patterns in the higher altitudes are projected to boost the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
