Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
