European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
