It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to beloved figures like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser avoids is what Woody is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Surely, the filmmakers will address the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the toys.
